Abstract

Background: Stunting is one of the nutrition problems that still often occurs in toddlers. This condition is influenced by a long-term lack of nutritional intake and repeated infectious diseases. The risk of infection can increase if handwashing is not done properly. Therefore, washing hands with soap is one of the steps that can be taken to help prevent stunting. Purpose: Analyzing the relationship between handwashing practices and the occurrence of stunting in toddlers aged 6-59 months in the working area of Bungah Health Center, Gresik Regency. Methods: The research design used is an analytical observational study with a case-control approach. Samples were selected using purposive sampling. The total sample consisted of 52 respondents, with 26 in the case group and 26 in the control group. Handwashing practice data was collected through interviews using a questionnaire based on SKI 2023, while the nutritional status of toddlers was determined based on anthropometric measurements. Data analysis was done using the Chi-Square test. Result: As many as 32 respondents (61.5%) have been practicing proper handwashing. The bivariate analysis results show that handwashing practices are significantly related to the occurrence of stunting in toddlers (p = 0.023; OR = 3.889; 95% CI: 1.178–12.841).  Conclusion: Handwashing practices are significantly related to the occurrence of stunting in children aged 6–59 months in the working area of Bungah Health Center, Gresik Regency.
