Abstract

This article discusses the iron sand mining conflict that took place in Lumajang Regency, right in Selok Awar-
Awar Village. The objectives of this study are: 1) to know the background and the course of the iron sand mining conflict,
and 2) to know the impact after the iron sand mining conflict. The method used in this study uses historical research
methods including heuristics, criticism, interpretation and historiography. The conflict that arose over iron sand mining
in Selok Awar-Awar Village involved two main groups, namely the pro and the con with the mine. This conflict stems
from the community's disappointment with the mining activities of PT Indo Modern Mining Sejahtera (IMMS). PT IMMS
has not been officially licensed since its establishment in Lumajang District. Even when PT IMMS closed, iron sand
mining was taken over by community leaders in Selok Awar-Awar Village. And assume the mining company will advance
their economy. From here the benefits of mining emerged. The cons believes that mining activities have a potential risk
of wildlife damage and disasters. And also since the beginning of iron sand mining, the drawbacks have based their
rejection on the minimal economic benefits. This article shows that mining activities have disintegrating forces on society
and are destructive to the environment.
