PERUSAHAAN TRANSPORTASI MODJOKERTO STOOMTRAM MAATCHAPPIJ DI MASA MODERNISASI KOTA-KOTA DI JAWA TAHUN 1896-1933

Abstract

Mojokerto during the colonial period was a plantation and industrial area, this was influenced by the fertile soil conditions and the flowing water of the Brantas river, making many private business actors establish industries and plantations in the area, especially the sugar industry. In 1896, the tram transportation company Modjokerto Stoomtram Maatcahppij was founded, which served passenger and freight transport. This research discusses 1) How the deveolpmet of the company Modjokerto Stoomtram Maatchappij in 1896-1933; 2) How is the impact of Modjokerto Stoomtram Maatchappij on the socio-economic conditions of the people of Modjokerto and its surroundings; 3) How is the impact of the malaise crisis on the company Modjokerto Stoomtram Maatchappij. The method used in this study uses historical research methods which include heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The results of this study indicare that the presence of trams in Mojokerto has a significant services by the community. The mobility of the people increased after the presence of the tram. A new kind of work was emerging related to trams. Another impact is that people who work as transportation service providers are getting rid of from the previous long-distance transportation to community transportation. In 1930, the Mojokerto Stoomtram Maatchappij company was hit by a malaise crisis which resulted in the company closing tramsways and lowering passenger ticker prices.
