Abstract
This study aims to analyze the role of history teachers at SMA Negeri 2 Jombang on the implementation of character education, especially during the distance learning process due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This study used a qualitative research method with a qualitative descriptive analysis approach from Miles & Huberman's interactive model which included the following steps: data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. Collecting data using interview techniques, observation and documentation. The consideration for the research subject was carried out by purposive sampling, namely all history teachers who were still actively teaching history subjects as well as students who were considered active in SMA Negeri 2 Jombang who met the research requirements. Results showed that during distance learning, history teachers have played their role on implementing the strengthening of character education through their role as learning designers, learning managers, learning directors, learning evaluators, and counselors, in which each of those units has been integrated with 94.44% of character education values, however 5.65% of the unimplemented character value is value of creativity. Further, the study found some external and internal factors that act as barriers for achieving the unimplemented values. External factors include problems in learning due to face-to-face limitations and learning hours as a result of the distance learning policy that is being applied by the school as a solution for the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Internal factors include the lack of adaptability especially in the use of information technology as an effort to assignments and online learning.
