Abstract

Wayang Timplong is one of the arts that is the driving force of the economy for art workers in Nganjuk Regency. If properly functioned, art will have a positive impact. This study aims to analyze the effect of the existence of wayang timplong on the economic life of art workers in Kepanjen Village, Nganjuk Regency in 1960-2016. The problem faced is where the wayang timplong art worker tries to maintain his profession to maintain his existence in order to survive in the economic field. This research raises a problem formulation (1) How can Puppet Timplong become a lucrative livelihood for its art workers?. (2) How can Timplong Wayang art workers in Kepanjen Village, Nganjuk Regency maintain their profession as puppet artists?. To answer the formulation of the problem above, the method used in this research is the historical research method which consists of four stages including, (1) heuristics, (2) source criticism, (3) interpretation, and (4) historiography. Based on the results of the study, it shows that the wayang timplong art has existed since 1910 and was created by Ms. Boncol. In 1960 the wayang timplong art was introduced to the public as an entertainment medium that appeared in various activities in the community. Its development continues to expand to create many new professions for wayang timplong artists. The existence of this art has an influence on the economic life of art workers. The impact on increasing income and reducing unemployment so that the welfare of art workers is fulfilled and the economy is getting better, as well as in maintaining their profession, wayang timplong artists make improvements to their skills and spirituality.
