PERKEMBANGAN KERAJAAN GIRI KEDATON TAHUN 1548-1605

Abstract

Giri Kedaton Kingdom was located on the North Coast of Java Island and it has played an important role in the history of the Archipelago. Giri Kedaton's important role was evident and independent and developed rapidly from the late 15th century to the end of the 18th century AD.
This research was conducted in the kingdom area of Giri kedathon, which located in the kebomas Gresik city of East Java. Meanwhile, yhe occurrence that used in this research around 1548-1605 AD. Because during that Period of time, kingdom of Giri Kedaton reached the glorious time under the leadership of sunan prapen Giri appeared as an influential Islamic kingdom in Java and along the coast of the eastern archipelago islands. Sunan Prapen also brought Giri kingdom to prosperous conditions, it served as the center of Islamic civilization on the coast of Java Island.
Based on the above background, the problem formulation can be divide in three, these are (1) How the situation and condition of Giri kedathon in 1548-1605 AD?, (2) How the process of transitioning from boarding school to the center of government?, and (3) How was the existence of the Kingdom of Giri Kedaton in the kasunanan and post-Kasunanan?. This study used historical research methods consisting of (1) heuristics, (2) source criticism, (3) interpretation, and (4) historiography.
The purpose of this research is explaining about the glorious time of Giri Kedaton during the leadership of Sunan Prapen. At this time the Kingdom of Giri Kedaton was at the peak of glory as Giri appeared as an influential kingdom ina reason of the political legitimacy. The emergence of spiritual and political power that later gained supremacy in Java and other regions. It was made all life activities in Gresik impossible to separate from Giri. The influence of Sunan Prapen's spiritual power in political development in Java can be proven when the Sultan of Pajang, Kyai Gedhe Pemanahan came to see Sunan Prapen to ask for legitimacy to become king in Pajang. The economy also developed to become a trading center at that time.
Sunan Prapen's successor no longer holds the title of ‘sunan’, but ‘Panembahan’, one title lower than ‘sunan’. This title change was reportedly due to the intervention of the Sultan of Pajang. This is where charismatic power can strengthen political, economic, and social power if one holds it.
