Abstract

Museums are public service institutions that have the role of storing and caring for cultural heritage collections. According to Government Regulation No. 66 of 2015 it is stated that museums have the function of protecting, developing, utilizing, and communicating collections. This function is a task that must be carried out by museums in an effort to manage their collections.Thisstudy examines how museums carry outthese functions.The focus ofthis research is on one ofthe museums in East Java, known as the Mpu Negeri Tantular Museum. The Mpu Tantular State Museum was previously located on Jl. Mayangkara Park No. 6 Surabaya. However, then in 2004 it was moved to Jl. Raya Buduran, Siwalan Panji, Sidoarjo due to the inadequate area of the museum building and unable to store the growing collection. the museum is more creative in structuring its collections and developing its activities, so that in 2014 it succeeded in increasing visitors and getting an award as the best museum in East Java. Based on this, the museum certainly has an effort in carrying out its functions. Therefore, this research has a problem formulation as follows: 1) Whatis the condition ofthe arrangement ofthe collection ofthe Mpu Tantular State Museum in 2004 – 2014? 2) Whatis the role of museums in protecting, developing, utilizing and communicating collections to visitors in 2004 - 2014? This research was structured using historical research methods consisting of four stages, namely heuristics, criticism, interpretation and historiography.
