Abstract

Film, since the beginning of its development has become an interesting phenomenon with the development of
technology and its application so that films are in the art category, both as entertainment to the expression of their
creators as well as communication studies as a means of delivering massages which are considered effective as, then
historical studies associated with the ability to obtain evidence. History of the development of civilization of a nation.
This study aims to analyze (1) How was the history of the development of film in Indonesia in 1940-1966? (2) What
were the obstacles in the development of the Indoensian film Industry in 1940-1966?
This study uses historical research methods that consist of four stages, including Heuristics, Verification,
Interpretation, and Historiography. In conducting the research, the authors collect primary sources in the form of
government archives on film consisting of Ordinances, Laws and Government Regulations, while secondary sources are
obtained from books, journals, and magazines that discuss Indonesian film, then criticize the sources obtained by
conducting research. Internal and external criticism, then filtering the source information obtained from primary and
secondary sources. Finally, writing about the dynamics of Indonesian cinema in 1940-1966.
The results obtained indicate that the development of Indonesian film in 1940-1966 has experienced dynamics
in its development from the Dutch East Indies to the Old Order. Then raised several obstacles, including the censorship
policy that was applied during the Dutch East Indies period until the Old Order era, the large number of imported films
entering Indonesia made the Indonesian film industry fail to compete in terms of story and quality so that Indonesian
films were less attractive to the public, as well as political turmoil. that occurred during the Old Order which resulted
in policies that had an impact on Indonesian cinema.
