PERAN JEMBATAN MERAH SEBAGAI TOGGAK PERKEMBANGAN SEKTOR PERDAGANGAN DI SEKITAR SUNGAI KALIMAS 1800-1900

Abstract

This research is important because the Kalimas River area of Surabaya has an important meaning in terms of the
history of the city. The Kalimas area has historical values in each area, especially the red bridge area. The red bridge
area as a historical area which became the center of trading activity during the Dutch East Indies government around
the 19th and 20th centuries. This study has the following problem formulation: (1) What is the historical value of the
Jembatan Merah area for the development of trade in Surabaya? (2) What historical value of the Kalimas River
supported the development of the Red Bridge trade? This thesis research uses historical methods, namely heuristics,
source criticism, interpretation, and historiography to answer the formulation of the problem studied so that the results
of the study show that: 1) Jembatan Merah which became the heart of Surabaya during the Dutch East Indies
government became the center of economy and trade because Surabaya has Kalimas port and port. 2) Surabaya's
trading center is located in Kalimas which is then still centered on Jembatan Merah making the city of Surabaya a very
busy city, so that the Kalimas river has an influence on economic and social activities for the city of Surabaya.
