PERAN JALUR KERETA API DI KABUPATEN JOMBANG DALAM PERKEMBANGAN SOSIAL EKONOMI MASYARAKAT TAHUN 1895 – 1929

Abstract

This research was motivated by the difficult conditions faced by the people of Jombang Regency in the period 1895-1929 due to forced cultivation policies and inadequate transportation infrastructure. The forced cultivation policy forced Javanese farmers to grow cash crops that were exported to world markets, but limited transportation infrastructure made it difficult to transport produce to ports or trade centers. Limited transport capacity, commodity delays, and the risk of rot and mold are the main obstacles to economic growth and trade in the region. In this context, this research focuses on two main questions. First, how did the process of building the railway line in Jombang Regency occur? Second, what were the socio-economic impacts caused by the construction of the railroad during the period 1895-1929? By highlighting the main routes such as Surabaya-Semboeng-Madiun, Mojokerto Kali–Mojoagung, KediriJombang, Babad-Jombang, and Krian–Ploso-Kertosono which were built by companies such as Staatsspoorwagen, Oost-Java Stoomtram Maatschappij, Kediri Stoomtram Maatschappij,Babat–Djombang Stroomtram Maatchappij, and Staatssporwegen en Tramwegen, this research aims to reveal the dynamics of this development. Historical research methodology is used as the main framework, involving several essential stages. Identification of sources (Heuristics), Verification and criticism of sources, Interpretation of sources and writing of history (Historiography) The results of the research confirm the positive impact, both economic and social, of the presence of the railway line in Jombang Regency.
