GAYA HIDUP ELIT EROPA DI KAWASAN TOENDJOENGAN SURABAYA TAHUN 1870- 1942

Abstract

The elite lifestyle of European people is characterized by luxurious living and is closely linked to Western and modern

culture. Europeans brought their lifestyle to their colonial countries, including Surabaya. Europeans in Surabaya during

the colonial period often carried out leisure activities related to their lifestyle. The problem of this research is how the

activities and lifestyles of European elites were practiced in colonial era Surabaya (1879-1942). Historical research

methods are used in this research, which consists of 4 stages, namely heuristics, source criticism, interpretation and

historiography. The results of this research show that the lifestyle of the European elite in Surabaya can be seen in one of

the areas, namely on Jalan Tunjungan. The Tunjungan area can function as an activity space where European traditions

are practiced, such as watching performances in the form of tonil, listening to musical orchestras, dancing, eating

sumptuous meals and watching films in cinemas, which is proof that there is a European elite lifestyle in Surabaya.
