Abstract

Prince Diponegoro was the son of Gusti Raden Mas Surojo, who we usually know by his title Sultan Hamengku
Buwono III and his wife, Raden Ayu Mangkarawati. Even though he was born from a concubine, Prince Diponegoro was the
eldest son of Sultan Hamengku Buwono III. Prince Diponegoro spent his youth in Tegalrejo with his great-grandmother Ratu
Ageng Tegalrejo, who was none other than the empress of Sultan Hamengku Buwono I. In 1825 Prince Diponegoro started
a war that lasted for five years. This war was motivated by events in May 1825 when the Dutch intended to build a road which
apparently passed through the grandmother's land in Tegalrejo. The installation of road stakes sparked tension between
Prince Diponegoro and his followers and the Dutch. In fact, the trigger for the war, which we know as the Java War, was not
just the installation of road stakes, but this event was the peak of Prince Diponegoro's emotional outburst. This war received
a wide response from various levels of society, both rural circles and noble groups, officials, ulama and other religious
leaders. Although there were also groups who did not like the Prince's actions and chose to join in with the cunning Dutch
tactics in their efforts to control Java.
