Abstract
This study was aimed to explore the reasons for non-suicidal self-injury and how psychological experiences relate to thoughts, feelings, and actions in young adult women.A qualitative approach with a phenomenology method was used in this study. Two young adult women were recruited purposively for this study based on predetermined criteria primarily they have been conducted self injury at least 1 year. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews and analyzed using IPA (Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis) techniques. The results showed that there were seven main reasons for the subject did self-injury, namely problems arising from family, breaking up with a boyfriend, having trauma of sexual harassment, as a response when facing problems, influenced by friends, triggered by the emergence of negative memories related to the past, and also as a diversion from negative feelings. There was no special preparation for both of subjects apart from preparing sharp objects and choosing a place to be alone. The dominant thought when doing self-injury is thoughts related to how to make an incision but it is not fatal and causes death. When the subjects cut, the subject feels like spilling her feelings through that cutting. Feelings of calm and relief are felt by the subject after self injury. However, these feelings only for a while and the subject continues to do self injury again and again when negative feelings are felt again.
