Abstract
The pandemic situation forced the school to make some adjustments, especially during learning activities. Learning activities that were originally carried out face-to-face in the classroom have changed to face-to-face through online media. The duration of giving material is getting shorter, and more emphasis is placed on giving assignments. The process of doing tasks that originally received teacher assistance, turned into independent activities and minimal supervision. These conditions require the strength of students to be actively involved, focus on learning activities and learning tasks even without direct supervision. This study aims to examine the relationship between involvement in learning or student engagement with learning motivation in a pandemic situation. This research was conducted at a high school in one city in East Java Province, and involved all students of class XI, which amounted to 200 people. Spearman rho analysis technique was chosen to find the relationship between the two variables, and obtained a correlation of 0.466. Based on the results of the study, student engagement is a variable that is needed to increase students' learning motivation, especially during distance learning, where there is no direct supervision.
