Preservation and Archiving

The UNESA Journal of Chemical Education (UJCEd) is committed to ensuring the permanent availability, accessibility, and long-term preservation of all published scholarly content. To safeguard the scientific record in chemical education against technological obsolescence, system failures, or unforeseen operational changes, UJCEd employs a robust multi-tiered digital archiving and electronic filing strategy.

1 Digital Object Identifiers (DOI)

Every peer-reviewed article published in UJCEd is assigned a unique, persistent Digital Object Identifier (DOI) powered by Crossref. The DOI serves as a permanent reference link that guarantees continuous access to the full-text article, metadata, and supplementary materials, regardless of future updates to the journal’s primary web address or portal structure.

2 Archiving Repositories and Electronic Filing Systems

UJCEd utilizes a combination of institutional, national, and international digital repositories to ensure redundancy and long-term content survival:

  • Institutional Repository: All published manuscripts, accompanying metadata, and supplementary files are archived within the Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA) Repository System.
  • National Digital Archiving: UJCEd submits its published metadata and full-text content to national archiving initiatives, including Garuda (Garba Rujukan Digital) and the National Library of Indonesia (Perpustakaan Nasional Republik Indonesia / Perpusnas), ensuring national-level preservation of scientific records.
  • International Preservation Networks: UJCEd participates in distributed archiving networks, utilizing LOCKSS (Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe) and CLOCKSS (Controlled Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe) protocols integrated via Open Journal Systems (OJS). These decentralized systems enable participating research libraries to store and preserve permanent digital archives of the journal.

3 Self-Archiving and Author Rights (Green Open Access)

UJCEd supports Green Open Access and encourages authors to archive their work in personal, institutional, or disciplinary repositories.

Policy Guidelines for Author Self-Archiving:

  • Pre-print (Submitted Version): Authors may deposit their original submitted draft (prior to peer review) in non-commercial pre-print servers or institutional repositories at any time.
  • Post-print (Accepted Manuscript) & Published Version (Version of Record): Authors are permitted and encouraged to deposit the final published PDF (Version of Record) into institutional repositories, personal academic websites (e.g., ResearchGate, Academia.edu), or subject repositories immediately upon publication, provided that full bibliographic credit and a direct link to the article’s DOI on the UJCEd website are explicitly cited.

4 File Formats and Metadata Standards

To maintain digital readability and prevent software/hardware obsolescence, UJCEd adheres to open, standardized file formats and interoperable metadata schemas:

  • Full-Text Content: All articles are formatted, published, and archived in standardized PDF/A (Portable Document Format for Archiving), an ISO-standardized version designed specifically for long-term preservation of electronic documents.
  • Metadata Interoperability: Article metadata—including titles, abstracts, author ORCIDs, references, and CRediT statements—is structured using Dublin Core and JATS XML (Journal Article Tag Suite) standards to facilitate seamless harvesting by international indexing engines and digital libraries.

5 Website Continuity and Orphan Works Policy

In the event that UJCEd ceases publication or the primary journal website becomes permanently inactive, all archived content will remain publicly accessible through the LOCKSS/CLOCKSS preservation networks, national repositories (Garuda/Perpusnas), and the UNESA institutional repository. This guarantees that all published chemical education research remains a permanent part of the global scientific literature.
