Dinamika Pembangunan Pura Penataran Agung Margowening 1977-2004
Abstract
The Hindu adherents in Balonggarut Village, Sidoarjo, have faced various obstacles and challenges in demonstrating their existence. They have encountered these obstacles and challenges since 1980-1988 when they aimed to uphold their religion by establishing a temple as the first place of worship for Hindu community in Sidoarjo. The purpose of this research is to obtain informative data in order to describe the evolving dynamics of Hinduism in Sidoarjo., particulary through the establisment of their initial temple. This research employs a historical research methodology, consisting of topic selection, heuristic, historical research methodology, consisting of topic selection, heuristic, historical verification or criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The finding of this research reveal that: 1) Prior to declaring themselves as Hindus, the Hindu community in Sidoarjo adhered to the belief of Buddha Jawi Visnu, demonstrating their existence in 1970 under the leadership of Mbah Untung in Balonggarut Village. 2) In his endeavor to advocate for and defend his religion, Mbah Untung constructed a temple in 1977. The construction of the temple faced both support and opposition until its official inaguration as Jagat Natha Margowening Temple in 1991 by the regent of Sidoarjo. The temple was later relocated in 1999 and renamed Penataran Agung Margowening Temple. The relocation of Jagat Natha Margowening Temple took place due to the emergence of the Hindu community in Sidoarjo in 1996, which was predominantly composed of Hindusm from Balinese.
