Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus is a non-communicable disease whose prevalence has been steadily increasing over the years, including among adolescents and adults. Academic stress is a factor that can influence a student’s physical and emotional response to consuming high-sugar foods. When stressed, students tend to consume high-sugar foods as a coping strategy to deal with pressure. Purpose: This study analyzes the relationship and differences in added sugar intake and academic stress levels among female nutrition and non-nutrition students in the class of 2022 at the Faculty of Sports and Health Sciences, Surabaya State University. Methods: This study is a comparative quantitative study with a cross-sectional design. The respondents consisted of 44 female nutrition students and 44 female non-nutrition students, selected using purposive sampling. Data analysis to test for relationships and differences used the Spearman correlation test and the Mann-Whitney U test. Results: The average added sugar intake was 41.6 g/day among nutrition students and 62.3 g/day among non-nutrition students. Most respondents experienced moderate academic stress (77.3% of nutrition students and 93.2% of non-nutrition students). There was no significant association between added sugar intake and academic stress among nutrition students (p=0.339) or non-nutrition students (p=0.224). However, a significant difference in added sugar intake was found between the two groups (p=0.033), while academic stress levels did not show a significant difference (p=0.149). Conclusion: There is a difference in added sugar intake between the two groups, with non-nutrition students having a higher added sugar intake than nutrition students
