Abstract

Abstract

Parental divorce is a traumatic experience that can have long-term psychological impacts, including increasing the risk of suicidal ideation in young adults. At this crucial stage of development, individuals are faced with the challenge of building self-identity and stable emotional relationships. One of the protective factors that has the potential to reduce this risk is self-compassion, which is an attitude of compassion towards oneself. This study aims to determine the effect of self-compassion on suicidal ideation in young adults who experience parental divorce. The approach used is quantitative with a cross-sectional design. Participants numbered 79 people who were selected using Accidental Sampling and met the criteria of age 18–25 years and had experience of parental divorce. The instruments used were the Self-Compassion Scale (SCS) and the Adult Suicide Ideation Questionnaire (ASIQ). The results of the regression analysis showed that self-compassion had a significant negative effect on suicidal ideation (r = -0.78, p <0.001), with a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.60. This means that self-compassion is able to explain 60% of the variation in suicidal ideation in participants. The conclusion of this study is that the higher the self-compassion, the lower the tendency of suicidal ideation. This finding emphasizes the importance of developing self-compassion-based psychological intervention programs to support the mental health of early adults from divorced families.
