Abstract
Student athletes in schools have various tasks, besides being required to excel in sports, student athletes are also required to carry out various obligations as students. This burden can potentially cause academic stress. One of the things that can affect academic stress is achievement motivation. The purpose of this study is to determine the existence of a negative relationship between achievement motivation and academic stress in student athletes at SMA Negeri Olahraga Jawa Timur. The research method uses non-experimental quantitative. This study used a saturated sample, all of the population used as research samples totaling 115 student athletes from 10 sports, including 57 male students and 58 female students with an age range of 15-19 years. Achievement motivation data was obtained using an achievement motivation scale instrument based on the theory of Smith et al. Academic stress data obtained from the academic stress scale instrument compiled based on the theory of Sun et al. The data analysis technique uses the product moment correlation test. The results showed that there was a negative relationship between achievement motivation and academic stress with a coefficient value of -0.271. The higher the achievement motivation, the lower the academic stress, and vice versa. Student athletes who have achievement motivation will be able to see their goals as athletes and as students clearly and be able to overcome the difficulties experienced an then can reduce the potential for academic stress.
