Abstract
The current study aimed to compare the differences in emotion regulation strategies used by athlete and non-athlete students at Unesa (State University of Surabaya). This study applied the quantitative method. In total, there were 1544student-athletes and non-athletes of Unesa who participated as the subjects. They consisted of 772 student-athletes and 772 non-athlete students with the age range 18-25. Based on their genders, the composition of subjects was 604 (9.11%) males and 940 (60.88%) females. These subjects were recruited based on two qualifications; they are active students and members of UKM Olahraga (Student Activity Unit-sports division). The data were gained by administering the Emotional Regulation Strategy Scale. Then, all data were analyzed by examining the Mann-Whitney test. The results revealed that there is no significant difference in the results of emotional regulation strategies between student-athletes and non-athlete students. This absence of differences in the strategy of emotional regulation between student-athletes and non-athlete students can be influenced by some factors. The first factor is the educational institution. All subjects were officially registered in the same educational institution i.e. Unesa, therefore, there was the possibility that they also shared similarities in perspective and behavior. The second factor is the age range. The farthest age range was only 7 years, consequently, the subjects tended to have similarities in terms of understanding and experience. As the result, the differences in emotion regulation strategies do not appear in this study.
