Abstract
Mental toughness is one of the essential factors for senior high school (SHS) athletes either in competition or outside the competition. There are physiological differences between men and women that are thought to be affecting psychological attributes, so that the differences had an impact on mental toughness. This research aims to discover senior high school (SHS) male and female athletes mental toughness differences. This research uses quantitative methods. This research is using saturated sample, i.e all the population used in the research. The number of sample is 60 athletes, divided into 38 male athletes and 22 female athletes. Sports that used as a sample consist of basketball, futsal, volleyball, karate, judo, taekwondo, silat, badminton, soccer, and athletics, with an age range of the athlete is 16-18 years old. Data collecting process is using scale instrument of sports mental toughness based on Sheard, Golby, and Wersch, while data analysis technique used in this research is independent sample t-test. The results show that the t value is 3.316 > 2.001. That means there are significant differences between male and female athletes mental toughness. Male athletes show higher average mental toughness scores than female athletes. By way of gender differences, male athletes are superior in concentrating and control themselves better against emotions and anxiety that arise, so that the mental toughness they have is different.
Keywords: mental toughness, senior high school athlete, sex.
