Abstract

Abstract

New students are in a transition phase from high school to higher education, and some are also experiencing a transition from their hometown to another area to attend college, or what is known as migrating. New students who migrate tend to experience social anxiety because they have to adapt to a new environment. This study aims to determine the relationship between self-compassion and social anxiety among new students from outside East Java. This study used a correlational quantitative method on 97 new students from outside East Java in the 2025 cohort at the Faculty of Psychology, Surabaya State University, who were selected using cluster sampling. The data collection instruments used were the Self-Compassion Scale (SCS) and the Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescence (SAS-A). Data analysis was performed using Pearson's Product Moment correlation test. The results of the analysis show that there is a negative and significant relationship between self-compassion and social anxiety among new students from outside East Java (r = -0.494; p =0.000) with a fairly strong correlation category. The results of this study indicate that self-compassion plays a role in reducing social anxiety among new students from outside the city. The higher the level of self-compassion, the lower their level of social anxiety. Therefore, strengthening self-compassion should be considered as a measure to support psychological adjustment in a college environment.
