Abstract

This study aims to analyze the academic adaptation strategies of Papuan students in meeting the academic demands at Surabaya State University (UNESA). Differences in the education system, language, and social environment are the initial challenges faced by Papuan students when entering the world of college. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data collection techniques were carried out through in-depth interviews and documentation, while data analysis was carried out through the stages of pattern matching, explanation creation, and time series analysis. The research analysis framework uses the theory of adaptation strategies that explain the adaptation process through the stages of adaptive behavior, adaptation strategies, and the continued adaptation process. The results show that Papuan students implement various learning adaptation strategies to adjust to the academic environment at UNESA. These strategies include utilizing campus facilities such as Wi-Fi and the library, using digital learning resources, familiarizing themselves with formal Indonesian and Javanese in daily communication, being active in class discussions, and involvement in student organizations. There is also a supporting strategy in the form of the use of AI in the lecture process. These strategies developed from initial responses to various obstacles such as limited learning resources, language differences, and difficulties in social interaction. The adaptation process occurs gradually and continuously, resulting in increased self-confidence, social skills, and academic readiness among Papuan students. Learning adaptation plays a crucial role in enabling Papuan students to adjust and navigate academic life at university more effectively.
