Abstract
Life within correctional institutions exposes prisoners to various psychological pressures, such as loss of liberty and social limitations, which can significantly affect their mental condition. In such situations, self-acceptance and resilience become crucial psychological capacities for adaptation. This study aimed to examine the relationship between self-acceptance and resilience among prisoners. A quantitative research method with a correlational design was employed involving 105 male prisoners at the Class I Correctional Institution of Surabaya (Porong Prison, East Java), selected through purposive sampling. The data collection instruments used were Berger’s Self-Acceptance Scale and the Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC). Data analysis was conducted using the Pearson’s Product Moment correlation test. The results indicated a positive and significant relationship between self-acceptance and resilience among prisoners (r = 0.226; p = 0.020), although the correlation strength was classified as weak. This implies that while self-acceptance plays a role in supporting prisoner resilience, its contribution is limited, suggesting the presence of other more dominant factors. Descriptive findings also showed that the majority of prisoners fell into the moderate category for both variables.
