Abstract
Smoking among early adult women often triggers psychological conflict between their awareness of the harmful effects of smoking and their actual behavior. This study aims to explore the experience of cognitive dissonance among early adult women who smoke. A qualitative approach was used with a phenomenological method to explore the subjective meaning of these experiences. The subjects consisted of five women aged 18–25 who are active smokers. The results of the study indicate that the subjects experienced dissonance in the form of guilt, regret, and a conflict of personal values. To reduce the dissonance, they tended to rationalize their behavior by seeking information that supports their actions, altering their beliefs to align with their behavior, and adjusting the level of dissonance so that it would not interfere with their actions. These findings highlight the need for psychological approaches that take cognitive dissonance into account in efforts to understand and reduce smoking behavior within this group.
