The Development of Balanced Nutrition Learning Media Using a Booklet-Based Approach for Package B Learners at PKBM Pandu, Jombang Regency

Abstract

Background: This study was motivated by the need for learning media that were suited to the characteristics of learners at Community Learning Centers (PKBM), particularly in the Package B equivalency program. One of the essential competencies was understanding a healthy, nutritious, and balanced diet; however, this material had not been taught at PKBM Pandu, Jombang Regency, due to limited learning resources. Purpose: The study aimed to develop an instructional medium in the form of a balanced nutrition booklet for Package B learners at PKBM Pandu, Jombang Regency. Method: The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach, adapted from Borg & Gall up to the seventh stage, which included: (1) identifying potentials and problems, (2) data collection, (3) product design, (4) design validation, (5) revision, (6) limited trials, and (7) final product development. Result: Expert validation indicated high validity, with test instruments averaging 96.97% and media validation reaching 93.44%. A limited trial with five Package C learners increased average scores from 64.00 to 97.32, while implementation with fifteen Package B learners raised scores from 62.67 (pretest) to 91.11 (posttest). The Wilcoxon test showed a significance value of p < 0.001, indicating a significant difference between pretest and posttest scores. Conclusion: The balanced nutrition booklet developed in this study was found to be highly valid, feasible as non-formal learning media, and effective in enhancing learners’ knowledge in accordance with their diverse characteristics.
