Abstract

Background: College students are prone to energy intake imbalances due to various factors, such as body image, physical activity, and academic stress. Students in the Sendratasik Education have high levels of practical activities, requiring energy intake that meets their bodies’ needs. Objective: This study aims to analyze the relationship between body image, physical activity, and academic stress with energy intake among students in the 2024 cohort of the Sendratasik Education at Surabaya State University. Method: This analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design involved 93 students selected using total sampling with inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data on body image were collected using the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ); physical activity using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire–Short Form (IPAQ-SF); academic stress using the Perceived Academic Stress Scale (PASS); and energy intake using a multiple 24-hour food recall. Data analysis was performed using the Spearman rank test. Results: 53.8% of respondents had a negative body image, 41.9% engaged in moderate physical activity, 80.6% experienced high academic stress, and 43% had an adequate energy intake. There was a relationship between body image and energy intake (p < 0.001, r = -0.441) and between physical activity and energy intake (p < 0.001, r = -0.410), whereas academic stress was not associated with energy intake (p = 0.094). Conclusion: Body image and physical activity are associated with energy intake, whereas academic stress is not associated with energy intake among students in the 2024 cohort of the Sendratasik Education at Surabaya State University.
