Abstract
The absence of emotional availability from parents is a phenomenon that often goes unnoticed physically but significantly shapes a child’s life experience, especially during late adolescence—a stage leading into adulthood. This study aims to explore the experiences of late adolescents who do not receive emotional availability from their parents. A qualitative approach with a phenomenological method was employed. The participants consisted of five late adolescents selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The research instrument was an interview guideline. The findings revealed three main themes: (1) relational dynamics with parents, (2) internal emotional experiences, and (3) acceptance and hope. Overall, the results indicate that late adolescents attempt to make meaning of their emotionally limited relationships with parents and show adaptive efforts through acceptance and hope. This study is expected to serve as a reference in understanding emotional availability, particularly in the context of parenting. Future research is recommended to explore the role of other significant figures in fulfilling adolescents’ emotional needs.
