Abstract
Online Disinhibition Effect (ODE) refers to differences in individuals’ behavior between offline and online contexts. These differences are influenced by anonymity, lack of eye contact, minimal authority, and other factors inherent in online interactions. Such conditions may increase self-disclosure, particularly among Generation Z as active users of social media. This study aims to examine the relationship between online disinhibition effect and self-disclosure among Generation Z participants who use social media X. This research employed a quantitative correlational design involving 210 Generation Z participants aged 13–28 years who were active users of social media X. Data were collected through questionnaires using the Online Disinhibition Scale (ODS) and the Self-Disclosure Scale. Data analysis using Pearson’s correlation revealed a significant positive relationship between online disinhibition effect and self-disclosure among Generation Z participants who use social media X (r = 0.385, p < .001). These findings indicate that higher levels of online disinhibition effect are associated with higher levels of self-disclosure displayed by participants on social media X. The results of this study provide a basis for the development of digital literacy initiatives and preventive interventions aimed at promoting safer and more responsible online communication behavior among social media users.
