Abstract

Abstract

The increasing intensity of internet use among early adults, particularly through social media, has the potential to foster maladaptive usage patterns that negatively affect mental health. One psychological consequence that may arise is rumination, defined as repetitive thinking about problems without engaging in effective problem-solving efforts. This study aimed to examine the effect of Problematic Internet Use (PIU) on rumination among early adult active social media users in Surabaya. This research employed a quantitative approach with a causal associative design. The sample consisted of 303 early adult participants selected using purposive sampling techniques. Data were collected using the Problematic Internet Use Questionnaire-Revised (PIUQ-R) to measure levels of problematic internet use and the Rumination Response Scale (RRS) to assess rumination. Data analysis was conducted using robust regression to test the effect of PIU on rumination. The results indicated that PIU had a significant effect on rumination, with a regression coefficient of 0.236 and a significance value of p < 0.001. Although the magnitude of the effect was classified as weak, the findings demonstrate that higher levels of problematic internet use contribute to an increased tendency toward rumination among early adults. This study concludes that PIU represents a contributing factor to rumination in social media users. These findings have important implications for psychological prevention and intervention efforts aimed at promoting healthier internet use among early adults.
