Abstract

Perkembangan media sosial di era digital membuat individu semakin terhubung dengan lingkungan sosialnya. Namun, penggunaan media sosial yang tidak bijak dapat memicu perilaku cyberloafing. Fenomena ini banyak dialami mahasiswa tahun pertama yang berada pada fase emerging adulthood, di mana kebutuhan relatedness yang tidak terpenuhi dapat memicu munculnya fear of missing out (FoMO). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji hubungan antara fear of missing out (FoMO) dan cyberloafing pada mahasiswa tahun pertama Universitas Negeri Surabaya. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan desain korelasional. Sampel penelitian berjumlah 231 mahasiswa tahun pertama yang dipilih menggunakan teknik purposive sampling. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah skala Online Fear of Missing Out (ON-FoMO) dan skala Cyberloafing. Analisis data dilakukan menggunakan korelasi Product Moment Pearson melalui program JASP versi 0.95.4. Hasil analisis menunjukkan adanya hubungan positif yang signifikan antara fear of missing out  (FoMO) dan cyberloafing dengan koefisien korelasi r = 0,503 (p < .001) yang berada pada kategori sedang. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa semakin tinggi tingkat fear of missing out (FoMO) yang dimiliki mahasiswa tahun pertama, semakin tinggi pula kecenderungan mereka melakukan cyberloafing. Hasil penelitian ini memiliki implikasi penting bagi pengembangan strategi pendampingan mahasiswa tahun pertama dalam mengelola penggunaan media sosial secara lebih adaptif.

Abstract 

The development of social media in the digital era makes individuals increasingly connected to their social environment. However, unwise use of social media can trigger cyberloafing behavior. This phenomenon is often experienced by first-year students who are in the emerging adulthood phase, where unmet relatedness needs can trigger the emergence of fear of missing out (FoMO). This study aims to examine the relationship between fear of missing out (FoMO) and cyberloafing in first-year students at Surabaya State University. This study used a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The research sample consisted of 231 first-year students selected using a purposive sampling technique. The instruments used were the Online Fear of Missing Out (ON-FoMO) scale and the Cyberloafing scale. Data analysis was performed using Pearson Product Moment correlation through the JASP program version 0.95.4. The results of the analysis showed a significant positive relationship between fear of missing out (FoMO) and cyberloafing with acorrelation coefficient of r = 0.503 (p < .001) which is in the moderate category. These findings indicate that the higher the level of fear of missing out (FoMO) experienced by first-year students, the higher their tendency to engage in cyberloafing. These findings have important implications for developing strategies to assist first-year students in managing their social media use more adaptively.
